Year 6 - Term 1
 
Our Learning Journey this term is 'Who Turned Out the Lights?'
 
Here are some of the things we will be learning this term.

 

English

In English, we will be using 'Goodnight Mr Tom' as well as a supporting text, 'Rose Blanche' to inspire their writing. The will be involved in a constructed a range of writing genres linked to World War II.



 

Science

Light
Children will be taught the following:
  • to recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines
  • to use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye
  • to explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes
  • to use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them
 

Maths

The children will be learning about place value with numbers up to ten million (10,000,000)
They will begin their weekly quiz involving mental strategies and arithmetic.







 

History

The children will experience a 'Super Start' to their history learning on World War II. The key skills there will be developing include the following:
  • To understand the chronology of a given time in history
  • Know and understand significant aspects of this period of history
  • To understand the methods of historical enquiry, thinking about contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past
  • To gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts 

 

Art


The children will design and construct a 'Blitz' artwork using paint techniques and a silhouette effect.




 

PSHEE


We will be exploring the theme 'Being me in my World' this term this term to enable the children to consider how they can make the most of the year, achieve their best and feel proud of themselves. They will also be considering their rights and responsibilities as a global citizen.


 

PE

The children will be developing their skills in tennis, working towards a fully scored match.
