Welcome to Year 6, home of great thinkers and learners.

As term progresses, we are very impressed with the children's attitude to their learning and how positively they have come back into school after the Christmas break.  During Book Week, the children had the opportunity to reflect on the previous term's whole class text, 'Letters from the Lighthouse'. They clearly enjoyed it and the way it linked  to so many areas of their learning throughout the term.  One child described the book as a 'real page turner' and another explained how they were able to relate to all the characters and really understand how it felt to be alive during World War II.

Given their great enthusiasm, we have been very excited to introduce the new book, 'The Explorer', by Katherine Rundell and the children have not disappointed, showing their curiosity and enjoyment already.  As we continue to explore the book, the children will be involved in many learning opportunities which they have, themselves, requested during their 'Planning with the Children'  session.  This is a great way of supporting them in leading the learning and being in control of  how they learn.

Thank you for your continued support with the new style Reading Journals - this is proving another good opportunity for children to celebrate their reading and engage more fully with a text of their choosing.

In  our maths lessons, we have been focusing on the four operations when calculating fractions.  As much of this is new learning, we are encouraging the children to use 'My Maths' to support them in developing a deeper understanding or to access online games.  Knowledge of times tables is a crucial part of being successful when working with fractions, and we would therefore ask that you continue to encourage your child to access TT Rockstars at home.

Once again, we thank you for all your support.

Reminders

PE  is currently on a Monday, but kit may be needed at other times so please make sure you always have a PE kit in school.

Reading
 - The children are expected to read regularly at home (at least 3 times a week).  Any extra reading will be rewarded with house points. This can be recorded in their planners until the new reading journals are distributed.

Spellings
 - the children are working on spelling rules and strategies for proof reading their work to identify errors.  This is helping them become more independent in their learning. From time to time children may bring spellings home to practise.

Maths
 - Arithmetic and mental maths tests will take place in school on a Friday. Times tables knowledge is crucial to support them with this.  They can use 'Times Tables Rock Stars' in school and at home to help them with instant recall of all the facts up to the 12 times table.

Bug Club
can be used by the children in school or at home and is a great resource to support reading. Please ask the class teacher if you need  a reminder of the user name and password for your child.
