Welcome to Year 6, home of great thinkers and learners.

We are very much looking forward to working with your children in the year ahead. The children have made a good start to the year, and are settling well, getting used to the new routines and expectations. The enthusiasm they have already shown for our new Learning Journey, 'Who Turned Out the Lights', focusing on World War II, has been great to see, and they have already shared the research they completed over the summer.

The children are very excited about standing for election for our School Council. Speeches will begin next week (week beginning 16th September) and they will need to prepare these, along with a poster (no bigger than A3!) to promote their election promises and ideas.

Watch this space for examples of the children's work.

Once again, we thank you for all your support.

Reminders

PE : Swimming is on Monday mornings in Terms 1 and 2. Other PE is currently on Wednesday a but kit may be needed at other times so please make sure you always have a PE kit in school.

Reading
 - The children are expected to read regularly at home (at least 3 times a week).  Any extra reading will be rewarded with house points. This can be recorded in their planners. Reading journals are to be completed once a week, just like in Year 5.

Spellings
 - the children are working on spelling rules and strategies for proof reading their work to identify errors.  This is helping them become more independent in their learning. From time to time children may bring spellings home to practise. The children will be bringing home their spelling journals, and will be asked to complete some spelling activities (from the investigation menu) at home.

Maths
 - Arithmetic and mental maths tests will take place in school on a Friday. Times tables knowledge is crucial to support them with this.  They can use 'Times Tables Rock Stars' in school and at home to help them with instant recall of all the facts up to the 12 times table. We will be setting regular homework on MyMaths, which is now accessible on mobile devices as well as laptops. The children have been given their usernames and passwords, and they have been glued into their planners.

Bug Club
can be used by the children in school or at home and is a great resource to support reading. Please ask the class teacher if you need  a reminder of the user name and password for your child.
